Business Case #1: Employee Reference

by Josephson Institute on January 13, 2011

A former employee who was let go because of repeated absences and lateness due to a drinking problem tells you that she has applied for a new position and that she has given your name as a reference.  She says she desperately needs a job (she is a single parent with three children), and she asks you to give her a good recommendation and not mention her drinking, which she assures you is under control.  She also asks you to say that she voluntarily left the company to take care of personal matters and that the company was always pleased with her work.  You liked this person very much and believe she is a good worker when she is not drinking.  You doubt that she really has licked the drinking problem, however, and you would not hire her back because she was so unreliable.

  1. What do you do?
  2. Suppose the problem was theft?
  3. What do you say to an employer who calls you for a reference?
