  For police administrators who have taken Getting the Best Possible Result course
  This course reinforces the BPR decision-making principles and introduces additional decision-making models and interactive discussion of scenarios developed by Josephson Institute and suggested by the course participants. • Screening and Weeding Out Toxic Officers
  For managers who select, train, and oversee officers
  Some men and women who enter policing simply aren’t suited for the job. Whether they lack character, commitment or competence, their impact can be toxic. They drain management resources, create morale issues and continually endanger the reputation of your department. This module focuses on the attributes of the Exemplary Peace Officer (character, proficiency, professionalism, and leadership) and teaches you to identify indicators of high-risk officers so that they can be screened out before hiring or during academy or field training. It also presents strategies and best practices for identifying and weeding out problem officers through disciplinary processes. Finally, the course deals with the challenge of remedial training and the extent to which toxic officers can learn to become exemplary ones.

  This course builds on the Best Possible Result decision-making strategies taught in the basic course and stresses the need to employ a management style that builds internal and external trust. This module focuses on identifying and developing leadership qualities associated with exemplary police administrators and sharpening analytical and decision-making skills. It presents strategies for dealing with internal constituencies, as well as external ones like the media. Participants apply the strategies to realistic scenarios.
  
  
• Enhancing Public Trust and Avoiding Damaging Scandals by Building a Culture of Character
  For senior policy-making administrators
  The character of your officers and the tone of leadership — what is expected, what is rewarded, and what is allowed — establish the culture of a department. This course focuses on strategies to build and maintain a culture of character where scrupulous integrity, mutual respect, personal responsibility, self-discipline, and a commitment to the policing mission are the norm. The goal is to enhance public trust and avoid damaging scandals. It addresses the “what’s in it for me” attitude of new officers, cynicism and burn-out of veterans, the difficulty of attracting quality candidates, and new dynamics created by compressed work schedules. It also highlights the difficult situation most senior policing administrators face: the community's escalating expectations and demands, posturing by local politicians, and hostile news media eager to reveal mistakes and generate suspicion and distrust. In this setting, ethical conduct and wise decision making is both a moral virtue and a prudent risk-management strategy.
