SAMPLE COVER LETTER TO THE MEDIA

Sportsmanship sets sports apart from all other levels of competition. Learning values is the ultimate product of educational athletics – not wins, losses, or championships.

We are now incorporating the themes of Pursuing Victory With Honor into our athletic programs. This successful nationwide program promotes sportsmanship and character education through athletics.

As a society, we are constantly bombarded with the message that winning is everything. No one can win every game, but everyone can practice the Golden Rule and follow the Six Pillars of Character.

It is important that you help us promote good sportsmanship by reporting sports in a different way than is done in the more entertainment-oriented competitions at the collegiate and professional level. Your goals should be:

• Promote the fundamentals of good sportsmanship and that disrespectful behavior has no place in school athletics.

• Report sportsmanlike behavior without giving undue publicity to unsportsmanlike conduct.

• Refrain from negative comments about participants, coaches, or officials.

• Report events impartially.

Enclosed is a press release announcing our support of the Pursuing Victory With Honor sportsmanship program. If you can find a way to use this material, stressing the need for sportsmanship and integrity at our events and in our daily lives, you would help instill a more positive sports environment throughout the community.

If you want more information on our campaign, contact us or CHARACTER COUNTS! at 800-711-2670

We look forward to serving you in the year ahead and appreciate your continued support.
