At this very moment, young people are playing sports on fields and in courts around the world. They’re also learning valuable lessons that will remain with them for their lifetime and affect countless others. As teachers, coaches, and parents, we have the responsibility to ensure that those lessons are positive ones.
In 1999, Josephson Institute convened more than four dozen leading figures in amateur athletics to Scottsdale, Arizona, to develop ways to reform the way sports are played, coached, and watched in America. The result was the Arizona Sports Summit Accord, a manifesto of 16 sportsmanship principles to which all athletic programs should adhere. The Pursuing Victory With Honor campaign is the vehicle for carrying forth those ideals. Overseen by a volunteer Board of Trustees, this initiative is endorsed by most major amateur athletic organizations.
Focusing on sportsmanship and the pursuit of victory helps athletes develop life skills and values like integrity, perseverance, sacrifice, respect, and responsibility. As the Olympic Creed states, “the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle.”
Let us help you instill values in tomorrow’s leaders, ensure that your institution upholds the highest standards, and promote and maintain the integrity of the game.
